What Make an Autistic Child Tick?
What is autism?
You will learn about autism, how it affects the brain and how people with autism think and learn differently.
In order to help your child or students thrive, you need to understand the fundamental characteristics of the autistic child.
Creating an adapted space is essential in order to teach a child with autism effectively. Whether you are creating a learning space at home, or adapting your classroom, a dedicated and adapted learning space can be the difference between a successful program and meltdown after meltdown.
We'll explore how lighting, furniture, colors and space impact an autistic child's ability to learn comfortably and happily - at home and in the classroom. You'll be given clear information you can use to adapt your own learning spaces whether you are a parent, teacher or therapist in private practice.
One of the most important tools you can incorporate into your home and classroom programs are visual support and visual schedules.
Most people know they need to be using some kind of visual support and visual schedule, but most people are using them incorrectly. When used properly, visual support is one of your most powerful tools to increase learning, communication and fun all while decreasing difficult behavior patterns.
Building communication skills is one of the most essential and difficult parts of working with children on the autism spectrum. If you are a parent, you probably spend a great deal of time wishing your child could communicate more eaily. If you are a speech therapist, you have probably realized the therapy exercises you typically use don't work in the same way for children with autism. If you are a teacher, seeing your students with autism try to express their needs verbally may just break your heart.
Individuals with autism learn language, and communicate, differently than other children because their brains function differently. This means we need to adapt our teaching methods. Children on the autism spectrum need to learn to communicate in a visual way. I will walk you through the exact steps I have used to help hundreds of kids go from being non-verbal to verbal.
This is not a quick fix, communication difficulties are central to an autism diagnosis and are on-going, but you will learn to guide and facilitate language acquisition in a powerful and clear way for your child or students.
Daily sensory play is essential for helping your child or students self-regulate and keep stimming behaviors at bay.
However, we all know it's not as easy as just putting out some sensory boxes and leaving the child to play. If you do that, you will end up with a huge mess, guaranteed! Learn to set up and mediate sensory play in a way that will give your child or students the sensory input they need all while teaching them new, interactive skills and having fun.
Stop spending all your teaching time managing difficult behaviors!
You will learn the exact steps you need to take to understand and guide behavior change.
Learn to understand the meaning behind behaviors you would classify as difficult (hitting, screaming, throwing, biting, to name a few...). All behavior is a form of communication and when you learn to decode behavior, you can guide your child or students towards more appropriate and functional behavior choices.
Learn to track behavior, identify the reason a behavior is occurring and come up with a solid plan to reduce the difficult behavior with more a functional behavior.
Become a master of positive reinforcement!
Learn to build fine motor skills in a fun way to help your child or students gain fine motor control, build finger, hand and wrist strength, begin creating lines and simple shapes and eventually progress to being ready to start, or improve, their writing.
Follow my guidelines to decide which living skills are most important for you to work on right now based on age and skill level.
I will be covering some of the basic living skills necessary for an autistic child to thrive such a toilet training, participating in daily home or classroom routines, hobbies and simple food prep. I will also be touching on food selectivity and sleep schedules.
